This was an excellent camp where we learned that being environmentally aware can be both difficult and very rewarding. Catching public transport to and from camp and walking between activities greatly reduced our carbon footprint for the weekend and was of benefit to our health, but it also put a time stress on transport and left us all exhausted. Picking up the unbelievable amount of litter along one small section of foreshore did not make a dent in the problem as a whole, but when we passed that place on the ferry ride home we swelled with pride knowing we had made a difference to that area. It was also significant that fishermen who saw us working picked up their own litter and put in the bin. My one regret was that after picking up 2 hessian sacks full of supermarket bags on the sea shore we forgot to take reusable bags shopping with us!

Also we are very grateful to the 4th Williamstown Sea Scouts who lent us their beautiful seafront hall for the night. Eating breakfast on their doorstep as the hot air balloons floated over a view of the sun rising behind the city is a memory I will take with me from this weekend.

Interesting numbers regarding our Sea Shepherd Sleepover:

3: Course meal planned, purchased, and prepared by cubs

1: lunch wrap prepared

170: Sailors aboard HMAS Paramatta who all waved back at our Cubs before being egged on to blow their fog horn.

1000: meters distance we saw the drone travel out to sea.

333: Japans quota of minke whales killed this year

4000: number of whales scheduled for killing over next 12 years

5000: meters of illegal driftnet dropped by one ship collected by the crew of the Steve Irwin.

18: Disposable plastic shopping bags we carried our shopping home in
